Bartley Heath

An area of heathland near Hook. The site is large. Over this century birch trees have invaded the site. The Hampshire Wildlife Trust have a management plan which involves the clearance of a lot of the birch to allow the heathland to recover. Horses are used to graze the area to stop the more rank grasses taking over and smothering the heather. The site was bisected by the construction of the M3 in the 1970's.

Greywell Fen

The site consists of an area of grassland, and the fen with a number of chalk springs, on the banks of the River Whitewater. The Wildlife Trust have recently obtained the lease of aonther adjacent field consisting of an orchid rich chalk grassland and further fen.

Our tasks here are usually either fencing to contain the highland cattle that graze the site, or scrub clearance in the fen.

This reserve adjacent to Bartley Heath has just been aquired on a 99 year lease. The site is similar to Bartley Heath before the heathland restoration process got underway. The heathland has been largely overgrown by birch woodland. We will be starting to clear some of thebirch to allow the heathland to recover.
